I Ate, I Drank ...

What's the best way to make change ($$)? Buy a Peppermint White Chocolate Mocha from Starbucks - truth.
In about an hour and a half I am going to be heading on my merry way home for the Lady Gaga concert in Toronto tomorrow! Yippee! Try not to be too jealous and have a lovely weekend!

Confession: Rapture Rhythms

Last night, after wandering downtown Kingston streets I ended up at my highschool friend's house just off campus. It was almost 2 am, we were chowing down on cheese and spinach pizza and reminiscing about the time I got in trouble for leaving my juicebox on the table in the cafetria in grade 10 - humiliating. While recounting that story to the group I began thinking about other random things from high school, namely bubbles on fire, jazz solos and band trips,  ping pong in gym class and confession. I've never confessed to a priest because that is some straight up Roman Catholic business and that's not how I role, but I did attend a Catholic high school within which I went to near-monthly mass and at least once a semester our religion class was sent to the in school chapel (I feel like this was called something else, but I've blanked). It was always a semi awkward affair for the reason stated above. Usually I would bide my time reading the reflection questions our lovely/awesome Chaplain (sidenote: who also wrote me a wonder letter of reference for a scholarship which I am eternally grateful for) had projected onto a wall until an appropriate number of students had confessed then I would silently slip out and back to class. This sort of anxious and uncomfortable experience of course brought me back to another awkward religious event: The RAPTURE. Now I myself am not in on this whole Rapture bonanza which televangelists seem to be delighted, no, Ecstatic over "WE ARE LIVING IN THE END OF DAYS- PRAISE THE LORD HALLELUJAH, AMEN!" (straight up this is how one lady minister began her preaching when I tuned into CTS midday a couple of weeks ago) .... but I am ecstatic over the song above and to more of an extent over the version of it below. I am ready to fly awayyyyyy - oh so anxious for the Rapture dayyyy! .....Well I've heard about it since I was a child, carried it with me through my troubles and trials .... I just can't wait!!! I just can't help myself, it is so catchy. Also it remains semi novel to me as I have yet to find an available mp3 version so I'm stuck searching it up on Youtube every time I'm looking to hear a little fundamentalist folk .... Anyway,  gather 'round kiddies and enjoy some Rapture Rhythms with me.

p.s. How random is the accompanying slideshow in the first video? - 1:50 and 2:26 are a bit much ... but then so is the whole thing...

Dry Hands and Tantrums.

I saw this picture and first thought: Adorable! I didn't think Duffy could be any cuter - but I was wrong. My second thought was of my fellow blogette who, without fail, would throw a tantrum each time she got into my car this summer and there was no hand cream. I'm not running some sort of luxurious limo service woman. Anyway she is a lover of Nivea cream and seeing this made me think of her tub of the stuff and dry hands =D Happy Friday.

WW_D?

This weekend I am charged with looking after my three youngish cousins. I brought their dog, Daisy, with me to pick them up at the bus stop which is oddly enough in front of another school, none of which attend. The bus was either late or I was given incorrect information to begin with because I ended up waiting around at least 15 minutes, during which I was witness to a questionable something. As I artfully prevented Daisy from eating (too many) plants and blades of grass a group of youngish (at least shortish) teenagers in a field behind the school caught my eye. There were at least 20 and huddled in a circle. I have 20/16 (as never let anyone forget) but I could not figure out what the hell was going on. I heard the odd F bomb but not in an especially angry tone, no one seemed to be too worked up - but still I watched. Then a smaller group broke away and then two more boys did the same and it quickly became clear that one of them was some sort of target. I flashed back quickly to the bloody images I've seen of MS-13 members getting 'jumped in' and had a bit of a panic attack. What the hell am I supposed to do when people start randomly fighting. It didn't look so bad - almost as if it was play fighting, but I couldn't be sure. It was over quickly and the offenders left - but the boy who received the pseudo blows called after one which obviously was like poking a bear and the boy came running and ended up throwing the other boys Bike around. Yeah - this is pretty much how grade 9 fights go down in Oakville. I was tut tutting the adults who walked by or watched and said nothing then realized - I'M JUST LIKE THEM. But really what could I do? I could sic Daisy on them, letter her lick them a couple times and then run. Or I could just let it play out - no one got hurt really, but everyone got away with what they did.

Chaiwalla!

It's the most wonderful time of the year!
I had some downtime at work today and ended up browsing through the online edition of my university's student-run paper, The Journal. I happened upon the Frosh Extra section and got this feeling of excitement in the pit of my stomach. I am so looking forward to going back to school for my last year, though it is sure to be bitter-sweet... but this is nothing new.
I start of each school year starry eyed, optimistic and hopeful. I end each year overworked and cursing latin, shakespeare and slow campus group walkers. (who walks in groups on campus other than frosh, which is just another reason to get a case of the crabbycakes)
Besides all that though, this is the time of the year with the best weather, least work, and most optimism - and that's good with me! Another good thing? Summer job is almost done and employers treated me to lunch at Stoney's! Had a delish chicken curry sandwich with apricots and almonds on whole wheat bread followed by cranberry-laced biscotti dipped in a frothy, sweet cappuccino. Yumm! =D Also received this charming mug covered in my duties throughout the summer. After watching Slumdog Millonnair (<-Don't hate on spelling - that's how the host pronounced it in the movie!) everything I did was followed by the label walla - starting with tea prep obviously.
Right Now: I'm watching Sicko, falling in love with Tommy Douglas and Hillary Clinton al over again!

Weekend Sum Up

I know Tuesday is now coming to a close, but I thought I'd do a little rundown of my weekend for form's sake - wouldn't want to miss documenting anything!

My family headed up to a neighbour's cottage this weekend and I opted to stay home - but I actually didn't spend much time at home as it turns out.

Friday I rented too many movies and ended up only being able to watch one (Confessions of a Shopoholic - cute...). Saturday I was startled awake by a crash of thunder right overtop my house which turned out to be quite licky because I had stayed up super late and not set an alarm. I headed downtown TO and hit up the ROM with Calvin. It was overrun with kids and culminated in me getting the wits scared out of me by a person dressed as a dinosaur slowly shuffling towards me ... very scary when you don't realize what's going on.

Dorcas picked us up at a subway station near her house and drove all the way back to Oakville for dinner at Alice Fazoolis (yay! my favourite) and BRUNO - Oh.My.God. I was so scandalized the entire time. I've decided that Borat was much better - but there was still loads of hilarity in this film as well. Later that night I endeavoured to watch another of the movies I rented (Waitress: went on too long, but kind of cute) and then fell asleep. Sunday I found some great deals on short and capris - much needed with my impending summer vacay!

Basically this weekend was a lovely break from the monotony of work-home-sleep-work ... hope everyone else had just as good a time and remember, tomorrow is already humpday! Schweet.

Karsh, G, Passion Pit: A Summarized Week in the Life ...

Yikes, It's been a while since a proper post, no? I can explain: I have been so super busy this past week and a bit. I had planned to post last Friday, then I had lots of work come up. So I decided to post on the weekend - but c'mon! The weather had been gross all week and finally this weekend it was absolutely beautiful so I couldn't justify sitting in front of my computer for any length of time. So now it is Monday again and let me just run down what's been happening in my corner of the world for the last little while.
Last weekend my mum and stepdad + my dogs came to visit for almost a week so when I wasn't working I was visiting and driving between Oakville and Bolton (Dorcas, I have seen the edge of York Region and it is FARMLAND!). I got a chance to revisit the McMichael Art Gallery and view the magnificent work of Yousuf Karsh, in particular his highly controversial (at the time) photo of Gow Crapper .... Monday I got to register for courses for my last year of school - for the first time ever just about all my first choice classes were available for me! Shockahhh! Tuesday I took my final driving test and PASSED! again Shocks all around (especially since I started the test by first hitting the curb, then forgetting to put the car in park while doing a parallel park in the bus that I drive). Okay, it's not actually a bus but it is a Volvo wagon so it's practically the same thing, right?! It's like as ginormous as an SUV but without the height and therefore visual advantage. This is the most exciting thing for me to achieve in years. I am the biggest worrier ever and for the past 2 years when I'm not thinking of something immediate by brain falls back on: OMGOMG I have to get my G before December 2009!!!! *Sigh of Relief*
Tuesday night I went for coffee with my girlies at Williams but received absolutely horrible service so I emailed a complaint which was responded to with a $25.00 gift certificate ... um hells ya! I will say that their Customer Service higher up is amazing compared to their restaurant service.
Friday I enjoyed a bbq with neighbours and then spent all weekend working a little and reading in the sun a lot!
This past week has also been great because I have discovered and rediscovered loads of great music! I have been in dire need of new music and something different than my usual fare. I am talking opposite end of the musical spectrum for me ... like DANCE music.
I've been listening to everything from Deadmau5 to London Beat - and I don't need any judgement thank you very much.
Recently I discovered (for myself, they've obviously been around a little while) this jem of a band Passion Pit and I loves them sooooo much. I am so glad there is still half a summer to enjoy this music as it is defo a summer jam...

Betsey, I Do Adore

Gorgeous weather for the first day of summer and FATHER'S DAY! It was so gross yesterday and I think I should know. I spent about 2 hours on out in the rain watching my dad play rugby yesterday afternoon. Sue and I started with a "Keep Dry at all Costs" policy by which we brilliantly huddled under impromptu umbrella tents on camping chairs. This policy was soon abandoned by me for the more practical, if a little more wet "Avoid Rugby Ball at All Costs" policy. I can't help it. As soon as the action gets close I get antsy and want to be able to sashay(read: book it) out of the way should a ball come hurdling towards me - which it did - multiple times. The game was enjoyable enough to watch, given that I don't know the rules (I've figured out some...) mostly I made wise cracks about tha various happenings on the field - that guy you looked like he was doing the doggie paddle on his back, the oppositions names for their plays: i.e. igloo 19 (wtf?!), and the one guy who sounded like he was hacking on a bone for a good 5 minutes before the ref asked if he was alright. Good Times.

Today though, was lazy in everyway. Breakfast, Reading on the back deck in the sun, realizing I was turning into a lobster and ducking for cover, back outside with freshly applied SPF60 sunscreen, etc. This afternoon is where it got exciting. With a big steak dinner overwith I decided to busy myself at the mall (never a good solution) so after dropping my brother off at hockey Laura and I headed that direction. After Meandering around and finding nothing I stumbled into the goldmine that is StyleSense. I love the thinking behind StyleSense. It is run by Winners but is purely accessories! Of course I looked at shoes then bags but ultimately ended up in the sunglass section where I discovered the best thing ever. BETSEY JOHNSON sunglasses! I La-La-La Betsey Johnson. No, I could probably never pull off any of her clothes but they are so much fun and her sunglasses are no different. I obviously could not control myself and bought 2 pairs - but I am NOT ashamed. They are the raddest sunglass, excepting my Ray Bans, EVER! And becuase Style Sense is so wonderful - They were more than 1/2 of their original retail value- WHAT UP! I remember first seeing Betsey on Fashion Television years ago and thinking - she shall be my favourite designer that I will never get to wear, oh how funny it is now she's been made available to me! Hope everyone else is having just as enjoyable a weekend! ta.

Good afternoon children,

and what a beautiful afternoon it is! The sun is shining, the birds are singing, the lawn mowers are ... well yeah.

As of Thursday I am now a part of the Flickr community. You can view my photos at http://www.flickr.com/photos/charries/.

Warning: It's a bit like amateur hour for me over at Flickr so don't expect to see the next greatest thing in photography.

On this sunny summer afternoon I'm listening to what else but Huey Lewis and the News's Power of Love. This song is so peppy and fun and I love it for summer. Have a wonderful rest of the day!

Best. Hat. Ever.

Today was gross weather-wise again. I was working feverishly all day at the computer which inspired mobility once I finally got home. I've been toying with the idea of rearranging some furniture in the very small bedroom I share with my younger sister in order to maximize space. I decided today would be the day that I started that process. I roped my sister into working on her stuff and while I was poking my nose into her side of the closet I found this awesome hat that was part of one of her dancing costumes from years passed. I quickly shut her side of the closet door and put it atop my head bursting out of the closet and performing an Ashlee Simpsonesque Jig to UB40's Red Red Wine. It was all very surreal. It wasn't until I did a little impromptu photo shoot and had tried on some tassled cuffs that my sister admitted the feathers were actually part of a headband that didn't belong on that hat. I was devastated. End of story.

Back to Square One

Picked up Ivana today for some afternoon delightful shopping at Square One. I did not have my mind set on buying anything in particular, but of course I was able to find something once I got there. Our shopping excursion began wonderfully but quickly deteriorated with a serious of unfortunate events - most for Ivana.

a) We indulged in trying on frangrances at Sephora. Alone we smelled lovely - together we smelled like a couple of prostitots on our way to an all ages club.

b) I wouldn't let Ivana go into Marla's (some non descript dress shop - one of those shops that pops up in Square Once and is gone the next time you visit the mall I'm sure)...

Ivana: Marlas! Marlas! Caitie Maaaaarrrrrlaaaaas!"

Me: "watch out for that balloon!" (I might have just said this in my head by I definitely wanted to tell her to be wary of the fast approaching balloon attached to a child's stroller being led by an inattentive father.)

Balloon grazes Ivana's shoulder - Ivana errupts in an expletives-filled tirade ... no one takes notice.

c) I convince Ivana that Ray Bans are sold at Sunglass Hut - I then leave the store wordlessly when I realize that they are indeed not sold there.

d) Just before leaving we go down a long dingy hallway to get to the mall restrooms - Ivana spots another father with a child in a stroller - this time there are 4 balloons - we scurry past anxiously.

e) Ivana is shoved into cleaning paraphanelia (inlcuding mop and bucket) by and older lady clearly in a rush as she tries to exit the bathroom - I hurry ahead laughing shrilly...

f) Ivana demands a Tim Horton's Ice Cap, and feeling sorry for her I willingly oblige - we putter around Mississauga clueless as to the location of a Tim Hortons.
Ivana: "It's Canada - there is one on every corner!"
We prove that optimistic statement wrong. When we finally DO find a Timmies there is no drive-thru. When we've parked and made our way past the door with no handle into the shop a lady behind the counter operates the ice cap machine to a splutter and says "No More Ice Cap." to the girl who is about to take our order ...

g) I finally pull into the Superstore parking lot and we head into the small Tim Horton's contained within the store - they are out of chocolate milk for the Ice Cap - Ivana is visibly upset ... We still get Ice Caps - how could we not after all that trouble?

(It's Been) One Week

Note: The title of this post is meant to be sung to the tune of the same name by the Barenaked Ladies ... in case you wanted to know.

It has been a week since my last post and for this I apologize (sorry Ivana I know I promised... but I got busy). I think a quick recap of the past week's events are in order. Worked Tuesday - Thursday (nothing too interesting here). I was finally able to use up the Roots gift card that's been burning a hole in my wallet since Christmas. Went to a lovely dinner at Milestones in Dundas Square in T.O. with Dorcas, Calvin, Ivana and Kiani. Ivana and I were particularly amused by the Ken Display in the bathroom. Being rabid blogettes we naturally took a photo and vowed to post it - so here I am fulfilling this vow. Ivana and I then went on one of our epic joyrides on Lakeshore. I should explain. Each Joyride begins with a mixtape (see previous post) and a destination goal. I don't know why but every single time this goal is Appleby College. Our fascination with the affluent private school students of Oakville is unparalled. I should also note that we NEVER make it there. the closest we got this past Thursday was a drive-by in which I awkwardly turned to pull in before Ivana exclaimed the drive was blocked by a chain and there was a nightshift guardsman on duty - Phew close call. This kinda reminds me of the time Kiani and I joyrided (joyrode?) through the parking lot of that pretentious Rotherglen School on Neyagawa and Kiani threw something out the window and then we laughed...good times (note: I do not condone littering in anything other than exceptional circumstances - this was one of those circumstances). Anyway - Friday I gymed it up with Ainsley and then went to dinner with my mum who came to town for a visit. Saturday we got Pedicures, hit up Sherway and then met my two stepsisters for dinner. Sunday was pretty laid back, but I did go see STAR TREK (YAY!) and it was amazing/I loooooove Spock. So that just about sums up my week. Hopefully won't abandon the blog for too long again. In other news ... I simply must come up with an amazing post idea for my 100th post which is quickly approaching!!! ideas?

What I'm Listening To: Amber, My stepsister, got me Day and Age by The Killers for my birthday and I know I've already posted about this album but I just must share the delightful song I Can't Stay. I obviously love Human and Spaceman, otherwise I wouldn't have asked for the CD, but I think I Can't Stay may be my favourite song off the album. I was determined to listen straight through to get a feel for the album as a whole, but I had to replay this song about 3 times before I moved on. Other good tunes: Neon Tiger, This is Your Life.

My Sweet New Ride

Yay! Tomorrow is my birthday and in anticipation of this blessed and revered event my dad surprised me by taking me to pick out a bike! I have been thinking about getting a bike for quite some time now. I had resolved to wait, but it turned out to be such a wonderful present. I've already Christened it with a ride through the forest by my house and then messed up the seat flying through a hidden pothole in between two speedbumps in the Sheridan College parking lot. All is good and fixed now and I am so going to be a bikeaholic (new vocab continues - Goalatude #8) all summer (Getting outside - Goalatude #4). As for the rest of my weekend. Most of it has been spent entertaining my cousin Maddie (her birthday is today!) and sister Laura by giving them mani/pedis and teaching them about life and such...

School's Out - Fun's In...

... so read the icing of a chocolate cake my stepmom made when she was a teenager. I know this because I've seen the picture of her holding it and it is amazing. Saturday I had my last exam and it went okay... and I just turned on my computer to find an email from my T.A. in Greek Archeology with my mark and explanation on my paper ... Groan ... But that is the only part of this post that will be devoted to school work ... now for the fun stuff. Went out Saturday night to party it up End-Of-Year style. Got a few more bumps and bruises then I bargained for. I know the bruise on my leg is from walking into a part of a building in downtown Kingston, but I just discovered a little cut above my right eye for which I have no explanation of its cause. Saturday was amazing because I got to see two real live fights. Well technically only 1 which went something like: lady hitting and running after a guy and i think screaming "Don't hate/touch my mother-in-law/stepmother" in the Pizza Pizza parking lot (the details are foggy). The second was inside the club we hit up and aparently 2 chicks got into it - But I kinda couldn't see that one properly. Gooooooood Times. Sunday I woke up waaay too early and continued frantic packing then grabbed brunch with my dad and drove (yes I drove - practice makes perfect for the G test) all the way back to Oakville. I then spent the rest of the day unpacking and organizing my room, which unfortunately I have to share with a messy younger sister. But everything is in order now and today I'm settling in, which means I'm thinking about all the things I want to accomplish this summer. Last summer is going to be pretty hard to beat as it was my most productive and possibly most fun to date. I had 2 jobs (1 full time), took and Aced a summer course, roadtripped with the fam. to Maine, roadtripped to Barrie (okay admittedly less glamourous a destination) for the Spectacular in everywayshapeandform Jack Johnson Concert and touristed it up in Kingston: visiting the Penn museum and embarking on the Haunted Walk of Kingston - for reals that town is crowded with spectres (just felt like using that word ... got a problem with it? wanna fight? just joshing).

This summer however I'll be luck y to find 1 job, let alone 2, and I'm defo not taking a summer course (that shiz is BELOW me now - not really there's just nothing else I can take at an appropriate level). As for concerts - I just checked Ticketmaster --> Kenny Chesney and Jonas Bros--> Ummm yeah that's a dallop (what? it's a word if we want it to be, right Dorcas?) of "Not in this lifetime" with a side of "When Hell freezes Over" respectively for me thanks ... Hold the purity ring (gift with purchase). Instead of that traditionally fun stuff, I thought I'd make a list (I loooove my lists) of things that I wanted to accomplish/do this summer...so, in what is sure to be the first of many drafts, here is the fabulous, the combobulated (once again folks, a word if I WANT it to be), the magnifique ...

CAITIE'S SUMMER GOALATUDES (I just like the sound of that):

1) Meet someone named Gregor .... perferrably THE Gregor from CBCs Wiretap (but I'm not picky - if this was last summer maybe, but this summer I gotta take what I can get)

2) Read 71/2 books. (7 is my favourite number after eleventy four and also seems a reasonable goal. the 1/2 is there in case I start a book only to find that I have a wickedbad case of the hates for it)

3) Actually listen and engage in some of the gazillion 'Learn French By Podcast' episodes that automatically dowload onto my pod. (When I first subscribed I was so into it and then I listened to a couple of lessons and peaced because it was too easy... now I've reconsidered ... yeah I basically get schooled by my entire family in the department de francais so I got get proactive before their next attack.

4) Get outside. (Even though I was superproductive last summer I remained unforgiveably pale because I was so busy studying or working to enjoy the sun)

5) Catch up on my National Geographic Magazines.

6) Save Money. (gawd this is like the worst entry on this list. Boo to you part of the brain that fuels practicality, reason, and good judgement... Boo. to. you.)

7) Find a craft and do it awesomely. (Not even just a craft, maybe add to my scrapbook, or paint, or buy [uhoh I can already see goalatude #6 flying out the window and and being torn apart by a pack of hungry "I want. I Want. I WANTS!!!"] one of those big boxes of crayola crayons [you know the one with the sharpener at the back - does that even realy work?]and drawing things) ... (are you sick of all my thought-tangent parentheses yet? I am [a little bit] but not enough to stop =P)

8) Expand Vocabulary. Ridonculous, Awesome, Rad, are all ... awesome (ah!) I mean delightful (phew!) words and some of my favourites to use in conversation on-the-daily, but I really need to punch it up (where is that phrase from?) and start using some seriously BA vobulary... also: should defo try using full words ... nah it's so much more fun to routinely shorten words in a way that will leave at least one person in a group conversation completely clueless =D. 2nd part of this goal is to continue trying to reintroduce the catchword "Boss" into current slang/lingo. I have been working at this since grade 11 - thats a 5 year stretch of casually slipping it into coversation and then patiently explainign when people don't know what it means. I was, I think, somewhat successful at helping bring back "Bitchin", popularizing "Ridonculous" and effectively killing "Jerkface" back in the day, so I think I might have a chance with this one.

9) Listen to More of my CDs. (I love my Pod and cann't imagine living without it, but I still buy CDS because I like listening to the full things the way the band wanted them to be listened to. That being said, for convenience sake I often just use my pod to play music. NOT this summer. While there are thousands of songs that I only have in mp3 format, I also have a sizeable collection of CDs. First on my list to listen to ... hmm: perhap Miracle Fortress and then Mattew Good Band)

10) Open ... Haven't decided but I know I'll think of something to put here...

Wow that is one boss list. I know that with a little hard work, a lot of self-encouragement and a healthy dose of "believing in myself" this list of Goalatudes with surely be complete by summer's end. for reals.

Now listen to I Want You by Kings of Leon. I FINALLY bought their newest album and popped in my car's cd player it is more wonderful than I could have possibly imagined. I actually LOVE every single song - there are NO fillers - just feels so hot and dirty and summery and ... like a real rock album... also, PLEASE check out their old stuff (some of my favourites: Soft, Knocked Up, Fans, Talihina Sky) because it is likewise rifrickendiculously boss.

Katch Frazes

A couple of weeks ago I was on the bus with Calvin coming back from watching the Watchmen (I think we can now safely say we KNOW: Who Watches the Watchmen =D) and we passed by a Chapter's. Part of its sign was burnt out so it read: CHATER'S - which of course automatically brought me back to my high school days when all I ever heard was "That's sooo chate" from my classmates. What I didn't realize then, which I do now is that the slang chate originated and is pretty much only used in Oakville, Ontario. How do I know this you may ask? ... Urban Dictionary:

chate
Originated in Oakville, "Chate" roughly describes a shitty deal or coming up short. The word's namesake was a student at OTHS (Oakville-Trafalgar Highschool) who was known to short-change you when dealing marijuana. It's primarily used by Oakvillians from the east side of town.
i.e. Hey man, you owe me $100. Don't be chate on me. i.e.This party is so chate, let's bust out of here.
Or read this ridiculously detailed article that looks like something out of the Oakville Beaver...
Anyway yeah ... language has just been on my mind lately, as has spelling. I've realized while writing this blog that I am a terybul speller =D. Today in Latin I was trying to focus.. (puh sorry couldn't even type that with a straight face ... anyway) I couldn't take my eyes off the poorly erased chalkboard behind my prof.. which included the words: language, power and privlidge. I still can't decide what's more disturbing ... the fact that someone in charge of a university classed spelled Privlidge like so, or that even though I laughed because it was wrong, I couldn't spell it properly myself and had to be corrected by Dorcas. well at least Privalege is better than Privlidge. ... in case your sitting reading this getting slowly more uncomfortable as the post goes on because you too cannot for sure spell it properly ... PRIVILEGE. It's okay - this is a safe place ...
