Lost Latin Lesson

I take latin as part of my degree in Classics and it is the BANE OF MY EXISTENCE! I hate it so hard and so wicked badly that I become aperplectic at the very thought of translating Cicero's Orations against Cataline. That being said, there is a certain kind of unrivaled joy that consumes me when I am able to recognize and even better understand latin when faced with it in my day-to-day existence outside of the classroom. One such moment of sheer thrill happened while I was watching this week's episode of Lost! When Sawyer and Juliet were confronted by two Others, the two men spoke briefly to each other in latin! At first I was confused about the fact that I could understand some of what they were saying even without subtitles. When the one yelled "Tace" I automatically knew he was telling the other guy to shut up. Then it dawned on me just as Juliet told Sawyer and John it was in fact Latin, the language of the enlightened. sigh - strange bliss. In any case, the fact that the other's speak Latin, coupled with the prescence of that strange four-toed statue wearing romanesque sandals, not to mention that Richard (or Bridget as I thought he was called =D) is admittedly very, very old, lead me to believe that the ancient Romans may have some role to play as the story of the Others very slowly unfolds. I hope the writers actually follow up on this crazy shiz because this plus the mysterious face that I saw in the black smoke (no joke: they are there - examine the smoke when Mr. Eko looks into it in S.2 or 3) is making my brain hurt.

Pan Chancho Please

This morning a group of us decided to treat ourselves to breakfast at the lovely Pan Chancho Bakery and Cafe. This is the cute little sister restaurant to another of my favourites in Kingston, Chez Piggy. I HIGHLY recommend their delicious brunch menu and hope to try some of their lunch items including a butter chicken wrap. The only negative, which I just realized, is that my sweater still smells like the breakfast I had ... so I smell like egg torta ..mmmm =) below is Pan Chancho's and some of the breakfast diners.

Friday Photo Folly

Last night after successfully throwing a party for friends Dorcas and I decided to capture the moment with one of those impromptu "aren't we so cute" self-taken photos. Unfortunately for us, I in my excitement forgot to switch the function from video capture to photo capture and we ended up with this delightful video clip.

The Milkwaukee Art Museum

These are pictures from my trip to visit my mum and stepdad over the holidays, but they were on my phone and I am just now transferring them onto my computer. I still thought they'd be nice to share though ...
The Museum itself is amazing in terms of architecture and looks directly out on the water. It is also home to some amazing permanent exhibits. We clowned around in the ACT/REACT exhibit which basically allowed viewer to affect the art they were viewing!

I'm LOST

Time travel is confusing - I just don't get it. Lost's new season debuted and and basically turned my mind to mush trying to figure it out. I don't like reading or watching stories involving time travel because it is beyond my brain's capability to understand them. I've already taken issue with this seasons take on time travel. Riddle me this: If only the survivors are swinging through time ... then why did the whole island move at the end of last season (implying that it is infact the whole island moving through time? But wait why would the whole island move when it's clear it's been there for millions of years so a three 3year leap in time should not effect it [evidence: four-toed foot] - unless the fact that the button in the hatch was not pushed realy did make the island visible ...) ew thought vomit is gross.

AMABO

Did you know that OBAMA Backwards is AMABO and that amabo in latin means "I love"? I knew I was studying Classics for some reason! So as the entire world probably knows Mr. Barack Obama become the 44th President of the United States of America today and if you had a T.V. on at all you also know that every single station (excepting TREEHOUSE and SLICE) was broadcasting the inauguration live. I won't beat you over the head with details because lets be honest - we all saw it if we wanted to and if we didn't we just don't care enough. I did chuck when Obama jumped the gun in repeating his name when getting sworn in and then couldn't remember another part and needed to be prompted - that's about the time when I turned off the T.V. because it made me feel awkward and embarrassed for him.

new post ... computer says no

I know it's been a while since my last post and I know that shamelessly plugging a show now years old is completely unacceptable as a post in itself, but I, like most Canadian university students have just returned back to my lovely studies and now have no time for anything other than the occasional Property Virgins episode or my strenuous latin translations. So, be that as it may - please watch this show. Little Britain is crude, disgusting, shameless, borderline racist and I absolutely adore it. I can't recommend any particular scene or episode because my love of the show developed over many episodes and trying to pick one above all would be doing a diservice to the show as a whole. At first I didn't find the show exceptional, but as familiar characters began to pop up every episode I began to find myself at home with the totally ridiculous cast of characters brought to life by Mr. David Walliams and Matt Lucas. favourite characters include Vicky Pollard, Marjorie Dawes, Carol Beer, Sebastian, and of course Daffyd (the only gay in the village). check out some funny bits from Little Britian HERE! Now This IS Rojo Caliente

Meagan has released a new video... and that's all i'm going to say about that. check out "I Need to Know" HERE! I'm not going to go down the dark and twisted path of reviewing the song and video myself because this one hits a little too close to home. I go to the same school and know someone who lives on the same floor as Meagan in residence and I fancy myself somewhat classy, so I'll just let the video seep into the consciousness of popular culture on campus and (panama?) and let others do what they do best with this kind of 'music'. I will say that my favourite part of this song is the little twinkling at the beginning very 80's, very Tiffany - nicely done rojo cali - I mean Meagan. let me leave you with these thoughts: I need to know, is there any good in all this bad?

Mili-wok-eh

For New Years my friend Kiani and I went to Wisonsin to visit my mum and step-dad. Unfortunately the trip got off to a bit more of a rocky start than I had hoped for, though not more than I'm used to when I travel. Embarrassingly - we missed our flight on Tuesday in the morning by about 5 minutes. The first time a Midwest flight is on time leaving Pearson is the first time I'm a little late - typical. After some Lauren Conrad-tears (as Kiani calls them) on my part we were able to rebook for the later flight wich left 11 hours after our original flight. Thankfully when we returned to the airport it was not nearly as busy - so we had time to have some fun on the moving sidewalks etc. While on the plane Kiani and I enjoyed the wonder that is Sky Mall - my new favourite magazine which tries to sell, among other things, a voice activated R2-D2, a "keep Your Distance" Bug Vacuum, and a sixteenth-century- Italian Replica Globe Bar. I myself will be saving up for a set of Successories Inspirational posters especially. We got to our destination pretty late and pretty much just headed to bed in preparation for shopping the next day. Shopping was less than stellar: lacklustre deals and not very good items for sale anyway made my spending very lean indeed. We headed to SHOGUN for dinner were Kiani lamented on the ethnicity of our cook and he picked on her. I was able to catch a piece of zucchini in my mouth on the first try which was pretty amazing. We were also given Happy New Year head bands which we wore with delight, then finished off the evening by watching No COuntry For Old Men (loved it!). Later in the night my mum gave us a fancy bottle of Champage with instructions to finish it because it wouldn't keep - we gladly obliged. Thursday we headed to the art museum in Miliwuakee, or as Kiani pronounces it: Mili-wok-eh, which was amazing. We enjoyed a couple games of pool which ended in me sinking the eight ball twice and Kiani sinking it once - all three times it resulted in the sinkers loss of the game, so yeah we aren't goof at pool - but then again I've never claimed to be. Here are some more pictures of our trip:
