I Don't Like Fridays

More specifically I don't like THIS Friday's weather. It's not so much the rain that irks me - it's more the unrelentingly harsh and bullying temperament of Kingston's wind that really does me in. My umbrella decided to eff off and turn inside out 3 times on my way to my 8:30 class this morning. I'm not suprised, though ... I have the worst luck with umbrellas.

On a happier note:
Just like Monday, Friday has its own collection of songs, but while Monday's songs are soooo "poor me blah blah blah" Friday tends to be more upbeat. Here is a cute cover of The Cure's Friday I'm In Love.
P.S. The choir that sings this cover (Scala and Kolacny Brothers) does a bunch of great covers: Creep, I Touch Myself (most hilarious), Every Breathe You Take, Under the Bridge, With or Without You ... the list goes on! and you should definitely check them out!

I Don't Like Mondays

Barf. This morning at 8:30 am was supposed to be my first class after returning from Reading Week. I stayed up late watching the Oscar - fully (I think that might have been the first time ever) and then I couldn't really sleep last night. so when 7:00am rolled around I was still exhausted. I decided that I most definitely should go to class though and I could rest afterwards. It was cold and windy, I missed the bus etc - but I got there with time to spare. Do you know who didn't get there? MY PROF!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Worst. morning. ever. I even missed the bus trying to get back home as well. And there has still been no explanation in the form of email or webct message or anyhting. The only thing that made my day somewhat okay was that I got to come home to my new cute little Friend Tyrone. Don't know who Tyrone is?! check it! Dorcas bought me my own little beanie baby Tyrone - although he is more stuffed animal than beanie baby - he only has beans in his bottom ... I still love him though! The picture is me holding Tyrone in my 'sweater-carrier' - in lieu of a Baby Bjorn of course!

oh Monday: you're so sad you have a bevy of songs just for you. These are a few of my favourites....
Monday Monday - The Mamas and The Papas, Monday - Jon Brion
I Don't Like Mondays - The Boomtown Rats, Blue Monday - New Order

If I had to descrbie my Monday through these songs I'd say it started off with Monday Monday which cut abruptly to Blue Monday upon arriving at my profless class, which then turned sharply again to I Don't Like Mondays when I missed the bus for a second time and neatly plateaued at Monday when I reached home.

Best of / Worst of The Oscars 2009

So, most people who know me know that Tina Fey is my IDOL. I adore her so much - she is so clever and funny and smart and I could go on all day. I was so exctied to see her on the Oscars last night presenting with Steve Martin and excitement only grew and grew as she poke fun at Scientology hardcore. This was THE. BEST. MOMENT. of an otherwise booring (intentional typo) show:

But with good, must come bad, and good lord did it come in heapfuls last night. Awkward, Ugly and Annoying can describe some of the less enjoyable moments and characters of the night:

1) Awkward: Sophia Loren presenting Best Actress: This was awkard, but mostly hilarious: The Dress! The Hand on Hip! The Tone of Disdain in her Voice! *sigh*

2) Ugly: Jessica Biel more like Fugly: #1 what was she even doing there? #2 what was she wearing - on her face as well as the dress - HORRIBLE from top to bottom. I booed in disgust when I saw her com onstage - earn your first pay check in 3 years then present at the oscars ...

3) Annoying: Plus Ones (as Dorcas affectionately referred to them). Okay so we all common folk here but it is FUN to chuckle at some of the non famous attendees who get get their nails done and their hair did, up only to be caught on camera from afar as part of the audience. Some Plus Ones are more interesting than others, mostly due to fashion faux-pas, while others are just relentlessly annoying (ahem: John Mayer - YOU are number 1 annoying plus one!) He may be famous (unfortunately) but he's not Oscar famous. Sorry John, but you are the Weakest Link - goodbye.

Dancing Dirty

Last night I went downtown to see DIRTY DANCING on Stage. I was so completely excited. Dirty Dancing is one of my most favourite movies - I've seen it an uncountable number of times and know way to many of the catch and not-so-catch phrases. I mean I am obsessed. I've even watched it's E! True Hollywood story more than once and have a copy of the Dirty Dancing Original sourdtrack and a newly acquired watermelon keychain- I'm an expert. This is probably why I was so thrilled the stage production followed the movie so closely (minus one uber cheesy campire scene). Everytime I knew a scene was coming up that I loved I would gasp and get all giddy - Dorcas was also guilty of this. If you DON'T have some of the Dirty Dancing songs (Oh.my.god. Blastphemous!) I've linked them below =D
Cry To Me (sexy times on a pedestal song!)
*sidenote: this song was used on Lost and it was one of the most wonderful moments I ever watched on t.v. -ever. And I watch a LOT of tv.*

Recombobulation: My New Favourite Word

I am on reading week right now and last Saturday I flew to see my mum and stepdad is Wisconsin. It was a nice visit but the real excitement happened on my journey home. I had just gone through security at Milwuakee's airport. Note: they are so completely random with their security at that airport. When I was flying back during the Christmas Holidays they pulled my bag aside and said they would have to inspect it. The riffled through everything until they found my tatered copy of Lilith's Brood to which the inspector said "aha - found it. We say saw paper." This time they they swabbed my woefully worn out ugg boots for God knows what. Anyway after I go through security they have this little through area with a bunch of benches all strewn about where I usually put myself back together. THis time however I happened to look up and Find a brand new sign that read RECOMBOBULATION AREA. I got all giddy inside and even though it was 6:30 in the morning I suddenly felt very awake and Jolly. Let me explain: Discombobulation/ated is only my most favourite world in the whole world! I didn't even know Recombobulation exists (i'm still not sure it actually does)! Even though the handle on my luggage was broken, it was so early in the morning, and I knew that at home all that was awaiting me was a crap load of homework - everything now seemed to be OKAY! Even an older man was like "Did you see the sign!?" and I responded enthusiastically "YES!!!!!!" Not only is it a practical area, but because of the name it is now also a happy area! It almost makes up for getting poked and prodded and having your luggage sorted through.

The Grannies

After spending the majority of Sunday working diligently on studying for my midterms and agonizing over a thesis for a paper I decided to chill out in front of the boob tube. I had totally forgotten that the Grammy's were on until I saw it on the Tv Guide channel .... and I probably would have been better off if I hadn't realized they were on at all. I didn't watch the whole show but it looked like a bit of a shit show from what I saw.

Most Awkward Moment: Estelle awarding Adele the Best New Artist Award Estelle wasn't nominated HA! and she has previously dissed Adele because she sings soul music and isn't black. 2nd runner up would be Adele saying she loved the Jonas Brothers and then laughing - that was also pretty amazing though!

Most Amazing Moment: ADELE winning best new artist I literaly squealed with joy, though I would have been equally and maybe even more happy if Duffy won, I was still sooooooo glad she beat out the Jonas Brothers! 2nd Runner up: Duffy winning best pop vocals and Adele winning Best Female pop vocals! Ladies cleaned up!

Scariest Moment: Jonas Brothers performing with Stevie Wonder. a) Concept alone is scary, b) the Brothers kept attack Stevie, jumping up on his platform getting all up in his mic , especially the Ugly One - He was all over Mr. Wonder - I was Uncomfortable.

Most "UGH" Inducing Moment: Coldplay winning best rock album over the Kings of Leon - Coldplay is BARELY rock and Viva la Vida definitely is pop. Tangent alert!: If a femal group had put out an album that was Viva La Vida it would automatically be labelled POP , not ROCK, but because Coldplay is all men they automatically get that label. eff. Tanget OVER.

Overall watching the Grammys just reminds me how irrelevant of an awards show it actually is. Yes, deserving artists like Adele and Duffy get more North American exposure by winning, but with Lil Wayne garnering the most nominations from the get go and Coldplay winning the best rock album and the Jonas Brothers being nominated at all proves how uncool and skipworthy the Grannies (intentional typo) really are.

Listen to Closer by Kings of Leon. I love Colplay but they did NOT deserve that award. (click the picture)

Tom Jones - Welsh Love

Tom Jones. um .... is there anyone greater? If we didn't have Tom Jones, we wouldn't have 'It's Not Unusual' and if we didn't have 'It's Not Unusual' we wouldn't have Carlton's dance from the Fresh Prince of Bel Air. And if we didn't have Carlton's dance the world would be just that little bit less wonderful. Anyway ... the reason I got onto the subject of Mr. Jones in the first place is because I was listening to my pod while working on my English paper and "She's a Lady" came on and my mind automatically jumped to one of my other favourite songs by Jones - DELILAH! It is hilarious in a very dark way and I though I'd share it with you on this grey Saturday afternoon + Tom Jones is Welsh and it's always a good time to listen to Welsh singers.... =) Click Carlton for a treat.

Polaroid

I have been deeply enamoured with polaroid cameras for as long as I have been aware of them. I even had one of those fad ones that could print stickers which I used somewhat carelessly while camping, eventully ruining any picture I took because sand had gotten inside the camera... but that is another camera, another story. My mum has had her very own Polaroid camera for eons and kindly gave it to me along with limited film (the price of polaroid film is criminal + it's being discontinued this year!). In any case I've been slowly using it up and I just finished my first pack of 10 and thought I'd share. The actual photo looks somewhat better than this scan but still a little sketch - but really when the objects in the photo are Village People, Elton John and Simon and Garfunkel albums can you really do any wrong?Using this camera reminds me of a grade 8 science project in which I made a pin hole camera out of an old powder Nesquik container. I had to remove the film in a lightless room so I did it in our mainfloor bathroom which has no windows, but my brother open the door for jokes and none of the pictures turned out - yeah i'm still a little bitter...In other news .... boooooooo it's Sunday which means I have 8:30am class tomorrow =( sad times.
