HG Blog

I love home shows. Any kind really: whether they involve buying a home, renovating a home, redesigning a home - it really doesn't matter. I'm just all about real estate these days. Most likely this is because a) they are easy to watch and pleasing to the eye and b) I can't actually do any of the things I see myself because I rent an apartment during school and spend the rest of the time at my parents' home - neither of which I am able to take any design liberties with. So... in an effort to satiate my desire for decor I've decided to use my blog as a kind of scrapbook of sorts for design. Along with my other mildy amusing entries, there will now be snapshots of design I like. Obviously this is more for my sake than anyone elses ... but then again the same can be said for the blog in its entirety.

Anyway, I LOVE LOVE the architecture of the room above - my only issue with the amazing ceiling bookshelves is the fact that reaching for a book could be a bit difficult because of the whole vertically-challenged thing I have to deal with.

Katch Frazes

A couple of weeks ago I was on the bus with Calvin coming back from watching the Watchmen (I think we can now safely say we KNOW: Who Watches the Watchmen =D) and we passed by a Chapter's. Part of its sign was burnt out so it read: CHATER'S - which of course automatically brought me back to my high school days when all I ever heard was "That's sooo chate" from my classmates. What I didn't realize then, which I do now is that the slang chate originated and is pretty much only used in Oakville, Ontario. How do I know this you may ask? ... Urban Dictionary:

chate
Originated in Oakville, "Chate" roughly describes a shitty deal or coming up short. The word's namesake was a student at OTHS (Oakville-Trafalgar Highschool) who was known to short-change you when dealing marijuana. It's primarily used by Oakvillians from the east side of town.
i.e. Hey man, you owe me $100. Don't be chate on me. i.e.This party is so chate, let's bust out of here.
Or read this ridiculously detailed article that looks like something out of the Oakville Beaver...
Anyway yeah ... language has just been on my mind lately, as has spelling. I've realized while writing this blog that I am a terybul speller =D. Today in Latin I was trying to focus.. (puh sorry couldn't even type that with a straight face ... anyway) I couldn't take my eyes off the poorly erased chalkboard behind my prof.. which included the words: language, power and privlidge. I still can't decide what's more disturbing ... the fact that someone in charge of a university classed spelled Privlidge like so, or that even though I laughed because it was wrong, I couldn't spell it properly myself and had to be corrected by Dorcas. well at least Privalege is better than Privlidge. ... in case your sitting reading this getting slowly more uncomfortable as the post goes on because you too cannot for sure spell it properly ... PRIVILEGE. It's okay - this is a safe place ...

When Bad Shoes happen to random Queen's students

What on God's green earth are these?! I was walking from my latin class to my Greek Archeology lecture yesterday and I saw a guy wearing THESE! wtf? The first thing that popped into my head was that sketch from SNL about J.J. Casuals (obviously making fun of my beloved Jack Johnson for being such a surfer hipster). Anyway I decided to look up just what these things were ...
Bascially they are exactly what they look like ... like toe socks in the extreme - toe shoes ..... what new and crazy product will they think of next for me not to buy?

What I'm Listening to>>> Empire of the Sun - We are the People, Walking on a Dream, Half Mast
If you love the 80's (or have an unhealthy obsession with them like myself), if you like freaky duos (think MGMT: trippy, techno, psychodelicness) and/or have a fondness for the likes of Mylo, Kraftwerk or even Jamiroquai then you will looove Empire of the Sun. also check out some of their videos ... please and then explain them to me.

Back to Reality

So I've come down from my high after the Alcestis perfomance and crash landed on the library books I was using for research on the central court and altar at Mallia. Bad times. Thankfully I handed that paper in today and there will be now more essays from me this year. Good times. Now back to latin ...

Alcestis

Last night was performance night and it was suiteably hectic, stressful, fun, and amazing all in one! Last minute painting of backdrops and construction of a backstage area all came together in the end. The actors and crew were all amazing, costumes were wonderful, and the audience (particularly Classics majors) got the jokes! phew. here a TONS of pictures from the big night! Unfortunately I didn't actually see any of the play because and I'm not in any og the pictures because under those black sheets to the left side I was frantically manouvering around and out of actors' ways whilst holding an ipod to shine light on my copy of the play anxiously awaiting any cue to prompt. Everything went off almost without a hitch, though and my DJ-ing was pretty much right on cue.

3 days...

Holy .... It's been a full semester of rehearsals and now the performance is only 3 days away! AHHHHH. I spent 7 hours almost straight from 3 to 10pm along with some other cast members painting the back drop and masks for ALCESTIS - my arms, back, feet are so sore but it was worth it!
Everything looks amazing and it's all starting to come together!!! I totally stole Pheres' masks and tried them on and I think I could maybe make this look work ... maybe.

Trash Toss

It's official - Trash Toss '09 has begun and 109 Wellington St. has come out strong tonight with their first toss of '09. Omg would that be a fun competition? sure beats walking up and down the stairs to dispose of trash the regular way. These are Calvin's first and seconds attempts at throwing our garbage onto our lawn for pickup - They actually landed right where they belonged! Check it.

Also ... Today was the most beautiful yet of the year. People were in shorts (a bit much) and the sun was shing and lovely so I've started thinking about what songs are going to be with me through summer and No Tomorrow by Orson is defo one of them....

Afternoon Jaunt

If you look extremely closely at the picture below you can see the probably 15ish wind turbines that line the shore of Wolfe Island - they just popped up out of nowhere - I LOVE IT.
We pretended we were members of the Yacht Club ...
Lake Ontario - Frozen The ice was getting pushed up on the shore...

The ice was melting and crackling

Cute Overload!

Obviously I love Dlisted as I've added it to my sidebar <-- I check that site on-the-daily. one of the sites Michael K mentions on his blog is cuteoverload.com and O.M.G. I am now addicted. Everytime I feel a little blue, bored, or just indulgent I head on over to my new favourite website and literally squeal over all the pictures and videos. That site has even taught me to love kittens. Any one who knows me knows that I HATE cats - and trust me, the feeling is more than mutual. but something about kittens melts my ice-cold heart. Puppies still rule though - here are my own dogs and my own personal Cute Overload!

Spaghetti Squash: How-To!

I have to cook for myself on the daily which can be really hard because I always have lots of left overs and there's not very much incentive to cook ultra delicious/healthy meals when your cooking for one. That beings said I do enjoy well made meals once they've been prepared, even if I do get a little sick of eating their leftovers (like the chickpea curry i've been eating since Thursday). One dish that is so easy it has a reputation is Spaghetti Squash! It is so delicious and so easy to make!
Step 1: Buy Squash. The first time I made this I went to A&P and they only had big squashes so I thought that was the only size they came in. Little did I know that at my new favourite store: Loblaws, they have all different sizes, so I picked up a cute little one that fit perfectly into my little caserole dish I got for Christmas!
Step 2: Get a Knife, spoon, fork, or whatever will be easiest for you to carve out the insides. It's like a pumpkin so you have to cut it in half and then carve out all the seeds.
Step 3: Preheat over to 350 degrees and put your squash halves face down in a caserole dish(es).
Step4: pop them in the oven for 45min-1hr
Step 5: Take a fork and scrape out the squash - it's stringy like spaghetti!
Step 6: add pasta sauce, cheese etc ... I added chicken and it was delicious.
Step 7: Enjoy your meal!
